OSHA Guidelines continued

The veterinary assistant and office staff should:

  • keep all locations clean, safe, and dry
  • provide easy access to clearly marked, adequately-sized, and unobstructed exits
  • ensure that compressed gas cylinders are properly marked and used
  • follow strict safety guidelines when handling hazardous chemicals
  • provide toilet facilities and clean water
  • maintain operating fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and other fire extinguishing systems
  • include protective guards or covers for machinery
  • keep electrical equipment free of hazards
  • provide information to employees regarding potential hazards of using equipment, hazardous materials, chemicals, etc.
  • require proper protection for eyes, face, skin, feet, respiratory, hands, etc. in situations that pose an environmental, chemical, situational, radiological, mechanical, or any other form of physical hazard
The office is required to provide a safe environment for workers, and can enforce what might not be specifically addressed as a violation with OSHA's general duty clause. The clause states that the employer must provide the employees with a safe working environment.
