Coding & Charge Capture Control Point
The coding and charge capture control point is a critical and complicated point within the revenue cycle. It is the point from which documented services are translated into billable charges. There are extensive coding requirements that can vary by payer and compliance is most critical. In this section, we will focus on the various methods in which charges are captured:
1. Charge Tickets - This is the most common method utilized for outpatient services. It is also used extensively for inpatient charge capture (consult tickets for example). It typically requires the provider to note the diagnosis code and CPT code on the ticket. The tickets are then keyed into the billing system during the checkout process or they may be batched and keyed at a later date. Common problems include:
- Inappropriate coding by the provider
- Keying errors by charge entry staff
- Delays in turning in or keying charges and lost or missing tickets
- Outdated charge tickets
