Administrative Assisting Profession

What Does An Administrative Assistant Do?

An AMS performs clerical and administrative duties in an office. These duties may include routine typing, transcription, preparing and maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, billing patients, handling collections, and preparing financial reports.

Basic Skills Required:
Anyone who aspires to become an Administrative Medical Specialist must first understand the characteristics of the AMS. To be successful, one must be proficient in the following basic skills:

  1. Minimum education level: High School Diploma or GED
  2. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  3. Typing speed: Minimum 45 wpm
  4. Critical reading comprehension skills
  5. Sufficient math skills to maintain patient financial records
  6. Ability to operate computer, photocopier, facsimile (fax), and calculator equipment
  7. Ability to enter financial/demographic data into a computer patient database
  8. Ability to access information over the Internet
  9. Effective organizational skills
  10. Interpersonal skills
