The first section is designed to introduce those who have not worked in a healthcare facility to the roles and responsibilities of healthcare workers in an inpatient and outpatient setting. In addition, since it is imperative that a coder understand the way information flows throughout a facility, the reimbursement cycle and how coding affects the both the flow of information and reimbursement will also be discussed. Finally, we will cover the career ladder for coders, discuss specific roles, responsibilities, ethical and legal considerations for coders, and the types of certification available to the profession.
It is estimated that the first section will require approximately 4-6 hours to complete. Assignments include reading, research, two essays, and one test to assess comprehension of the material.
