ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS

The acronym ICD stands for International Classification of Diseases. Previous editions of the ICD, including the soon-to-be replaced edition 9, were comprised of three volumes. Volumes I and II were the alphabetical and tabular indexes for disease, symptoms, signs, and health issues. Volume III included tabular and alphabetical hospital procedure codes. Generally, when you purchased an ICD-9-CM coding manual, especially in a hospital billing and coding environment, all three volumes were included. A physician or ambulatory care provider typically used only volumes I and II, and when coding procedures and office visits, used the CPT-4 (Current Procedural Terminology - 4th Edition).

ICD-10-CM (International Statistical Classifications of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) is the replacement for Volumes I and II - the diagnoses, signs, symptoms and health related codes.

ICD-10-PCS (International Statistical Classifications of Diseases and Related Health Problems - 10th Revision - Procedural Coding System) replaces Volume III - the procedures performed generally within a hospital environment.

The ICD-10 editions, both CM and PCS bring with it massive changes - which will be discussed at length in this course.
