Overview This Unit will explain the history of the development of disease classification systems including the emergence of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Subsequently, it will describe the differences between the current edition (9th) of the ICD, and the distinction between ICD, 9th edition, and the ICD, 9th edition, Clinical Modification (CM). This Unit will also discuss the proposed procedural coding replacement of Volume III of the ICD-9 and the American Medical Association's Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) using the ICD-10-Procedural Coding System (PCS). And finally, the Unit will provide a comprehensive comparison of ICD-9-CM to the soon-to-be-released ICD-10-CM including the new features, benefits, structure and guidelines of the ICD-10-CM. Later Units will present instruction in coding disease, injury and conditions using the ICD-10-CM; and guidelines for healthcare entities to assist them in preparing the organization for implementation of ICD-10-CM. Except for an overview, comprehensive instruction in ICD-10-PCS will not be included in this course, since the potential adoption of -PCS is not anticipated until at least 2 or 3 years in the future. |
